Frame fasteners
in renovation work

Holidays are not only the holiday season; it is also a hot time of renovations in our houses and apartments. Whether you are just refreshing the walls or carrying out a major interior makeover, you are sure to be installing a lot of decorative and complementary elements once the intended scope of work is complete. Then reach for proven solutions, i.e. the highest quality fasteners from Klimas Wkręt-met.

In the extensive range of Klimas Wkręt-met products, there is a category of fasteners that are used to fix elements in concrete or masonry substrate – the so-called frame fasteners, also called frame plugs.

What makes them special

Frame fasteners consist of two components: a steel screw and a plastic sleeve. The screws used in FAST fasteners have a special rounded thread shape, which allows for proper expansion of the sleeve, and a reduced thread zone, which facilitates insertion into the sleeve. The screws are made of carbon steel and then coated with a layer of zinc. For fasteners used outdoors, screws made of stainless steel or coated with lamellar zinc are used.

The sleeves range from 8 to 16 mm in diameter and have characteristic ribs to prevent them from rotating or slipping out during installation. The FAST base line fasteners also have specially designed notches that allow the fastener to be spread in four different directions during screwing, increasing the expansion area and pull-out strength. Polyamide (nylon), a material with the best physical and chemical properties, is used for the sleeve of the frame fasteners.

Wide range of applications

rame fasteners can be used both indoors and outdoors. They can be used for both heavy items such as kitchen cabinets and lightweight items such as shelves, frames and lighting. These types of fasteners are also suitable for hanging fencing components, roller blinds, awnings, roof antennas and even for connecting structural elements such as beams and posts.

Types of fasteners

There are 3 main categories of frame fasteners: basic, specialised and economic frame fasteners.

Proper fastener selection

Although these types of fasteners seem very similar, they differ in many ways. This is because a number of factors are taken into account in their design and production that affect the effectiveness and robustness of the fastenings. Therefore, in order to properly select a frame fastener, you need to consider the following elements:

  1. size, thickness and weight of the component to be installed If you want to install a metal TV bracket on the wall, measure the thickness of the component to be installed to the wall. Then add up this value with the thickness of the plaster and the depth of the anchorage and you will get the appropriate length that the frame fastener should have.

In the second step of selecting a fastener, you need to determine the forces that will act on it. To do this, you should weigh not only the component to be fixed, i.e. the bracket, but also the TV. The sum of the weights will allow you to determine the forces acting on the fastener. Each Klimas Screw-met fastener has specific pull-out strength, given in units of weight (kg), this determines the fastener strength.
  2. installation location (indoors or outdoors) The next stage is the selection of the screw, the fastener in terms of its corrosion resistance. Screws are usually galvanised. If the element is located in a residential building, its corrosion resistance is high, so a protective coating in the form of white galvanised zinc (Zn) is sufficient.
  3. type of substrate In the next step, determine the type of substrate in which you are going to install the fastener, as it has a great influence on the load-bearing capacity of the fastening. In the case of Klimas Wkręt-met fasteners, information about the types of substrates in which they can be used is excellently displayed on the packaging – both in terms of colours and graphics. This makes it easy to find the right type of fastener.
  4. installation method It is worth mentioning that there are two ways of fasteners assembly on the market: pre-assembly and pass-through assembly. Klimas Wkręt-met frame plugs are used as pass-through assembly. Such assembly is faster and easier. The basic line frame plugs are delivered pre-assembled, which additionally eliminates the problem of incorrect screw selection. Thus, a hole needs to be drilled in the substrate, the entire expansion sleeve needs to be inserted through the component to be installed into the substrate, and then the screw needs to be fastened. In this case, the length of the sleeve coincides with the length of the screw.

NOTE!When installing a frame fastener, avoid:

  • mixing products, i.e. using sleeves and screws from different producers
  • drilling holes in the substrate that are too shallow – the depth of the hole should be at least 10 mm longer than the anchor depth of the fastener
  • fitting the anchor in a dirty hole – the drill hole must be cleaned from drilling residue
  • impact drilling into hollow bricks, ceramic hollow blocks and aerated concrete because of the possibility of destroying the substrate
  • hammering screws into the sleeve instead of screwing them in (with the exception of quick fit plugs)
